It may very well be the most photographed building in Greece, with millions of people every year making the trek up to the sacred rock called the Acropolis, high atop the city of Athens.

Constructed by the Athenians during the 5th century before Christ– more than 2,000 years ago– as a series of temples for offerings to the gods, the main building of the Parthenon has been a destination for visitors for centuries.
As the main focal point of the city of Athens and an international symbol of Greek democracy, the Acropolis has its share of controversy surrounding it too.
