The airport on Mykonos closed for runway repairs that will take few weeks.
While that poses an immediate inconvenience to travelers, there are likely to be some long-term benefits. The work is part of an effort to modernize 14 airports in Greece that have seen big traffic growth over the summer.Mykonos Island National Airport alone saw passenger growth of 51 percent in October, according to transport company Fraport.
Mykonos is an increasingly popular vacation spot that has attracted celebrities for decades. Jackie O and Grace Kelly visited in the 1960s, and Leonardo DiCaprio, Ariana Grande, and Bella Hadid are among more recent vacationers.Beyond the runway repairs, Fraport is also planning to increase the size of the terminal; add more check-in counters, departure gates and security lanes.
“We have made all efforts and taken all measures to minimize any inconvenience for the passengers” Fraport Greece CEO said in a statement.
