The price of souvlaki, the iconic Greek delicacy, is set to rise by 10 to 15 percent by May 1, the president of the newly established Association of Grill-Houses.

Speaking on Greek television, Giorgos Polyzos blamed the souvlaki spike on the rise in the price of meat, as well as high taxes and high insurance contributions.
Wrapped in pita bread, souvlaki will soon cost around three euros, the Grill House Association president said. “We will make increases to ensure quality,”.
He acknowledged that consumers will be unhappy about the price increase, but he claimed that they would be angry if the quality of the product is compromised, as it would if their price remained at today’s levels.

A price rise is necessary in order to protect our product,” Polyzos emphasized.
